A possum merino poncho is the rare piece of knitwear that solves several problems at once: it works as a wrap, a scarf and a hood, and weighs almost nothing. This collection holds one design in nine colours — the VUONO scarf poncho, knitted in New Zealand from 53% merino wool, 40% possum fur and 7% silk.
The blend is the reason to buy. Possum fibre is hollow through the core, which makes the knit up to 20% lighter and up to 30% warmer than a comparable wool poncho. Merino handles breathability and moisture transfer, so skin stays dry rather than clammy, and silk adds smoothness and strength. The result barely pills: the fibres are durable enough that they don't break and raise lint the way ordinary wool or cashmere does, even after years.
One seam, at least six ways to wear it
Construction is deliberately minimal. The poncho has a single seam with an opening at the end. That seam forms a V you can place wherever you like — on the shoulder, at the front, at the back — and the opening lets you wrap the piece around the neck as a scarf or pull it up as a hood. At least six ways to wear it, before you improvise with a belt. Flat measurements are roughly 95 cm wide and 55 cm high with a head opening of about 35 cm: one unisex size for the whole family.

The possum fibre is a by-product of controlling an invasive species with no natural predator in New Zealand: the material exists because the population has to be managed either way. Sauso has stood for Finnish design since 1929, and the same standard applies here — buy once, wear for years. The poncho needs washing very rarely: airing and a light brush is usually enough.
